Type Locality and Naming

Hualong basin (Xining). The naming section is located in the vicinity of Shangtan, Lohuzang Gully, Hualong basin, Qinghai. Named by the Fifth Team of the Comprehensive Geological Survey Party, Qinghai Bureau of Geology in 1989.


Lithology and Thickness

Mainly greenish gray, brownish yellow and brownish red conglomerate, sandstone, siltstone and mudstone, with well-developed large-scale cross bedding. The thickness is 270–389 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It conformably overlies the Lower Dongshan Fm (now Xiadongshan Fm)

Upper contact

Its top is overlain unconformably by Quaternary loess or fluvio-lacustrine deposits.

Regional extent

This formation is distributed at Shangtan, Lohuzang Gully in the Hualong basin, and He’erjia, Amigang, Yerimao, Shanpingnan, Baishiya and Hongliutan in the Guide basin, Qinghai.

Fossils

Proboscidea: Anancus sinensis; Perissodactyla: Hipparion cf. tchicoicum, Chilotherium sp.; Artiodactyla: Axis shansius, Gazella kueitensis. The sporopollen is Artemisiaepollenites-Chenopodiacea-Abietineaepollenites assemblage, with Chenopodiaceae, Artemisia, Salix, Pinus and Ulmus predominating, indicating an eco-environment dominated by mixing of forest and steppe in the basin then.
